Haystacks were popular during the late 1800s and many prominent painters used as a mainstay in provincial life. This particular piece is reminiscent of the French painter, Jean-Francois Millet and his painting, Gleaners. The women work in the foreground Features pretty jewel-tone colors, while stacks of hay and a cart lay in the background filling in more details of the everyday French country life.
